I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 7 and in 2021 I will be a year 8. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.
During art, we have been working on our monoprinting from this past few weeks.
There were copies of plants, leaves and flowers, we had to trace some of it from different difference copies to make our own background using a baking paper sheets. Then we had to photocopy them 2x into papers. We had to colour and for the other one is to monoprint it, we used an ink.
Since I haven't actual tried to monoprint, so at first I had no idea how it works. I had some struggles and difficulty when halfway to completing it, but I eventually finished it.
Here's my monoprint:
I messed up many times but this is what I did.
Thank you for reading my blog, I'll cya later, goobye :>
Pour half a teaspoon of a powder ginger inside the cup.
Add half a cup of water into the cup.
Put one tablespoon of sugar inside the cup.
Mix your ingredients inside the cup with a spoon.
Add 5 drops of Lemon Juice into the cup.
Taste it and adjust the flavour.
Add one quarter of teaspoon of yeast.
Let it brew for one week.
Results:
I only tasted it once but not much since I didn't really like it. We waited for a couple of days and we then finally tried it. It taste sweet but with no flavour at all but the smell of it was strong and it didn't seems like it taste good.
Discussion:
What is a Fermentation?
A fermentation is when a yeast eats glucose (sugar), and it breathes outCO2 (Carbon dioxide - gas), then it excretes alcohol. You'll know when the gas has come off, you'll start seeing bubbles. This process is called Respiration.
Thank you for reading my blog, I hope you learn something new and goodbye:))
Add 10 drops of universal indicator into the test tube.
Put different amounts of acid and base into the test tube (depends on you).
Observe what happens to the colour.
Results:
Discussion: What are the pH colours?
The indicators changes colours because of the different pH ranges. An indicator can only change colours when it is added with acidic or alkaline solutions. To see if a solution is acidic or alkaline, you can try to make an indicator from a red cabbage.
Alkaline solution - Combination of base solids that dissolved in water.
Acidic solution - More concentrations of hydrogen ions.
The range of the pH scale is from 0 to 14. 0 to 6 is acidic, 7 is neutral and 8 to 14 is alkaline.
Thank you for reading my blog, I will be posting next time, goodbye:)
Today, I will be talking about a healthy menu for a week. During health, we are currently learning about foods that are healthy for us.
Some students in our class doesn't usually eat breakfast before they go to school, we had a great discussion about how we should not skip breakfast, lunch and dinner because it is important to eat. Some people has a diet plan, they don't eat and starve themselves because they might think they're getting big, but in reality, they are just growing, foods helps us grow and have more energy, there is no limit when it comes to eating.
There are different types of food groups, which is protein, carbs, grains
, dairy, fat, vegetables and fruits.
We had to be in pairs and we had to make a healthy menu for a week, we were looking for foods that are healthy for everyone.
Thank you for reading my blog, that's all for today, have a great day, goodbye:))
It's going to be an another blog about Maui and the sun, but I'll be sharing you the activities I've done.
First activity that we had to do is:
"Imagine if Maui was unavailable to capture and slow the sun. Create an advertisement to find someone else to do the task. What skills would this person need? What would you expect them to do this job? - Also include a phone number for them to call and a bold, interesting heading to grab peoples attention.
I created a poster by using the website called Canva. I just made it simple with bold fonts, a simple background, and some information that includes a fake phone number (Do not dial this phone number as it is fake). Here's my work:
The next thing I did was to come up with an invention to help Maui that can be used to capture the sun.
I drew different symbols and just tried to add them altogether to make an invention. I added a little description explaining the design I created. I also labelled them so it won't get a little confusing. #
Thank you for reading my blog, I hope you enjoy and I'll see you next time, goodbye:))
This post will be about science, the experiment we did last week since I wasn't able to post it. There was a rotten red cabbage since our teacher left it for days. We can make colour by using Acid and Base.
Aim: I want to find out how to change colours by using red cabbage with Acid and Base.
Research:
Method:
Equipment:
Test tube
Red cabbage
Beaker
Dropper - science
Test tube rack
Stirring rod
Acid and Base
Instructions:
Get all your equipment ready.
Get a (rotten) cabbage and put it inside the beaker.
Add a half of a water inside.
Use the stirring rod to stir till the colour gets darker.
Place the test tube in the test tube rack.
Add red cabbage inside the test tube by using the dropper.
Use the Acid and Base ( you can add as much as you want to make a colour) inside the test tube with the rotten red cabbage inside.
Make a colour.
Results:
First of all, the rotten red cabbage did smell but when we added half of a water inside it kinda fade away. At first, it was really fun making those sorts of colours but everyone got competitive when we had to make different colours, a colour that is not the basic. A mixed colour would also count. I feel like we added more Base than Acid.
That's all for today, I hope you enjoy reading and that's all for today, goodbye:))
Today I will be talking about Diwali. Diwali is a festival. There is no original date of Diwali, it has a different date each year and it changes, but this year it was celebrated on Thursday November 4. I made a small presentation, just some facts about Diwali. I didn't get to add a lot but so far this is what I've done.
Thank you for reading, I hope you learnt something new about Diwali, goodbye.
For today, I will be sharing my work about how Maui slowed the sun. This story is about a guy living on a village where there's not enough sunlight during the day, so he decided to slow down the sun.
We had to read a text and watch a video to know the story. There were some questions that I had to answer that is part of the work. I haven't finish all of the slides but I will be showing what I currently finished.
Thank you for reading my blog, I hope you learnt something new. Goodbye:))
Today is an another blog during science. We are going to learn how to make sherbet.
Aim: I want to find out how to make a Sherbet.
Research: We had to find 2 different videos that are the experiment and science about sherbet.
Method:
Equipment:
Popsicle sticks
Mini red cup
Baking Soda
Citric acid
Raro (Flavour)
Paper
Instruction:
Get your equipment ready.
In the paper, you will be given a baking soda, citric acid and raro.
Pour a small amount of each ingredients inside the mini red cup.
You have to add each ingredients one by one (You can't put them all at once).
Try to get your mixture right, it depends on you on what you should add more or less. (You can have a taste to check)
It has to be a little bit bubbly and not too sour.
Results:
(During the process of making it, I didn't have time to take a picture but I only had this.)
At first I couldn't get the mixture right because I added too much citric acid which made it really sour, but as soon as I added the baking soda it kinda had no taste and is really dry. I then added the raro, I think it got a little better than before since it wasn't that sour anymore. It took me some time to make it right. I had to add less citric acid and more baking soda with raro.
Discussion: Why did it foam?
It starts to foam because of the chemical reaction from the baking soda and citric acid. This is what makes them sour. citric acid is a type of chemical that is an acid, some of these are strong and can be dangerous but it doesn't apply for all, some acids are safe.
Thank you for reading my blog, I hope you learnt something new today, goodbye:))
For today, I will be going to talk about what we are currently working on during Art.
The first thing we had to do is to go on the link (Quizlet) and go over the words that are used about art works. We were given an image of Henri Rousseau's paintings and cut them up into background, foreground and middleground images. I had to stick them into an A3 paper and position them separately.
This is what I've done:
Henri Rousseau's painting
Here are some facts about Henri Rousseau's art:
- His paintings are mostly jungle landscapes.
- Henri Rousseau's painted 123 artworks.
- His most expensive artwork is the "Lion eating a boa".
- His paintings are worth from $10 USD to $2,882,500 USD.
Thank you for reading this blog, have a great day and goodbye:))
Today is an another period of science, which means another experiment. We will be doing a blind taste testing, there will some foods that they're going to give to us and we will put it in our mouth, but our eyes will be covered, while we'll be pinching our nose to stop it from smelling the mystery food that they'll give, then guess what it is.
Aim: I want to find out if food tastes differently when you can't see or can't smell.
Research: We had to find a different video that relates to the experiment that we're doing which is a funny video of someone eating, a science of tasting video, and an experiment about blind eating video.
Funny eating video
Science of tasting video
Experiment about blind eating video
Method:
Equipment:
Blind fold
Mystery foods
Instruction:
Get your equipment ready.
Wash your hands
Put on a blindfold.
Put your hand out and pinch your nose.
Eat the food and guess what it is.
Release your nose and taste the food.
Where does the food react on your tongue.
Result:
I didn't get to do the experiment since I wasn't at school but I heard that it was fun.
Today I will be talking about what I've learnt about gymnastics during P.E. This week, we have been doing gymnastics, and we have Mr Hilliard for P.E.
We have been given a document where we keep track of the things we're going to learn, basically like a checklist. I haven't done that much since I've missed 2 period of P.E. But I was able to try some of these skills.
We went through the attitudes and values we must show, and about how we can manage ourselves. We also need to have a partner who will rate your skills and your improvements during this week. The person who'll rate my skills during this time will be Rheanne.
At first, I didn't really think gymnastics would be fun since I'm not really into gymnastics but I did learn something, and I guess it was fun since I tried some of these skills.
I've only learnt cartwheel, blind walk, and forward roll. I'm still currently improving my skills.
Thank you for reading my blog, I appreciate it, goodbye:))
I will be sharing some facts about the bird called Kea. I think this will be the last time that I'll be posting about "Uncle Don knows heaps of wacky stuff" activity book. Today we had to read page 23-28. I used canva to create this poster that I made. This topic was interesting to I tried to find as much information as I can. Here's the poster:
Thank you for reading my blog, I hope you learnt something new, goodbye:))
Today, we are doing another experiment for science and it's going to be about hot chilli. For this experiment, we're going to try hot chilli and wait for about 2 minutes after we try 3 different drinks at once, which will be milk, water and ____. We have to repeat this 3 times and to keep track of the result.
Aim: I want to find out the best way to cool down your tongue after eating hot chilli.
Research: We had to find 3 different types of videos about Hot chilli, funny, science and experiment.
Funny
Science
Experiment:
Method:
Equipment:
Hot chilli sauce
Popsicle sticks
Drinks - Soda, water, milk
Timer
Instructions:
Get your equipment ready.
Get a drop of hot sauce on your Popsicle stick.
Lick the hot chilli sauce.
Start the timer.
After 2 minutes, drink your drink.
After 5 minutes, how hot is your mouth?
Repeat the experiment but with a different drink.
Results:
The first chilli I did was without water. I only took a bit and it was still spicy. At first it was burning in my tongue, I rate the burning sensation an 8 but then after 2 minutes, it wasn't that spicy anymore, the spiciness dropped down to 4.
The second chilli I did was without water, again. I took the same amount of hot chilli but this time I rate the burning sensation an 7.5, after 2 minutes it only dropped down to 6 because my lips was also burning with my tongue because of the hot chilli.
The third chilli I tried was without coke. It was still spicy, at first the burning sensation was an 8.5 and after waiting for 2 minutes and took a sip of the coke, it then dropped down to 7 but I feel like the coke wasn't effective it got worse a bit. But this time it feels like there's a sting in my tongue, my lips was still burning.
The last chilli I tried was without milk. Honestly, it's spicier than before when I tried it the burning sensation was about 9 and after 2 minutes I rate is as 7, for me the milk did work.
The water works the most, then milk and lastly coke.
Discussion:
Why does chilli burn in your mouth?
A chilli has a compound that is called Capsaicin and it's actually an alkaline. The capsaicin is the reason why we feel this hot sensation in our mouth when we eat chilli.
Why did the milk reduce the burn?
Since the hot chilli has a capsaicin which is fat-suloble, and a milk has milk fat in it, it washes the burning sensation in your milk.
Thank you for taking your time to read my blog, I hope you learnt something new, have a great day, goodbye:))
For today's blog I will be sharing some information and facts about these different types of animals. We had to read the article "Uncle Don knows heaps of wacky stuff" activity book, in page 17-22. I found lots of animals that is interesting, but these are the one that got my attention, giant weta, peka-peka, stoats, and ruru. I found tons of information that I didn't know.
That's all for now, I hope you learnt something new, goodbye:))
We are now back at school. During art, we had to listen to a story book that talks about Henri Rousseau. Henri Rousseau is a French painter. While listening to the story book, we had to take notes, facts that is in the book/video.
This is the notes I wrote that I currently have (not finish yet).
Henri Rousseau is a toll collector, 40 years old that wants to be an artist.
He loves nature (foliage).
He has to teach himself since he cant afford an art lesson.
After hearing about the art exhibition, his canvas are displayed on the place the show is held.
He walked around to gather some ideas, and ends up in world's fair.
While he was painting, a tiger crawled in.
Every year he attends the art exhibition, but art experts always makes fun of him.
He spends hours painting on cemetery, he paints and learns.
A gardener sneaks him into the hothouse, and he goes in.
Words I didn't understand:
frond
tenderly
banquet
frolic
This is one of Henri Rousseau's art works that I admire. This painting is very realistic and has lots of details in it. It is called "The Equatorial Jungle" that is created in 1909.
That is all for today, thank you for reading my blog, goodbye:))
Today we had to read an article, "Uncle Don knows heaps of wacky stuff" activity books, in page 12-16. There are different animals that we had to research about. I talked about Trout, Kiwi burrows and crayfish. I used canva to make this poster.
These information was interesting, I didn't know these facts until I researched about it.
That's all for now, I hope you learnt something new, goodbye:))
Yesterday and today we had to read this article called "Uncle Don knows heaps of wacky stuff" activity books. The topic that I wanted to research was about wetlands.
I researched some information about wetlands and made a bulletpoints for every facts I found. I used the website called Vengage to make this, I wasn't fully done since I have to add more information. But this is what I've done so far:
I didn't know half of these information till I researched about it. It's quit interesting.
Thank you for reading this blog, I hope you learn something new, goodbye:))
Last week, we've been focusing about Flora and Fauna. We did a note taking, we found out our NZ native species quiz and a book to read from page 4-7. In this book there are different facts, and we get to choose which topic we want to research. For mine I am researching about Eels in New Zealand, and about the Octopi(octopus) changing colours. I just found it interesting that's why I picked these.
Thank you for reading, I hope you learnt something new. Goodbye:))
On Wananga, we've been working on NZ landmarks for 2 weeks already. We must choose 5 landmarks and give facts for each of them. I picked Christchurch, Queenstown, Kaikoura, Dunedin and Lake Tekapo. Click this link to see my work: Link
I know this is just a short blog, but thank you for your time reading this, I hope you learn something new, have a good day, goodbye :)
For today's blog, I will be talking about verb and adverb. During Wanaga, we've been focusing on our writing and grammars which includes the part of speech. A verb is an action words (ex: jumping, eating, playing, throwing), verb words usually ends with 'ing'. An adverb is a descriptive word for verb, it is more detailed and tells you about how the action is present (ex: slowly, rushly, gently, quietly, shockingly), adverb usually ends with 'ly'.
There were activities that we had to do. Take a look at my work:
Verb sorting activity:
Walk
Run
Eat
Say
Stagger
Step
March
Stroll
Amble
Canter
Sprint
Gallop
Race
Munch
Gobble
Chomp
Taste
Declare
Mutter
Charge
Whisper
Consume
Exclaim
Speak
Base verbs: Fill in the gaps
We play with our toys.
I cry when I’m sad.
At night, I sleep in bed.
You can talk on the phone.
I can read lots of books.
You can build a tower with bricks.
I smile when I am happy.
We watch films on the tv.
I eat my lunch at school.
Identifying adverbs: Highlight the adverbs
He smiled cautiously.
She frowned angrily.
He walked to school quickly.
Next she looked for her coat.
It would be his turn soon.
2. Use your own adverb to complete these sentences.
Today in Wananga, we had to read and learn a little information about places in New Zealand and had to do this activity, we also have to include an information of this place.
Here's my work:
Tasman Sea - A sea between Australia & NZ
North Island - One of the two main islands on NZ
Christchurch - The second largest city in NZ
Auckland - The second name of Auckland is ‘city of sails’
Pacific Ocean - Ferdinand Magellan named the Pacific Ocean
South Pacific Ocean - It’s average depth is 4,280m (14,040ft)
South Island - South Island is called ‘Te Waipounamu’ in Maori
Thank you for reading my blog I hope you enjoy, goodbye :)
During Wananga, we were doing a wellbeing time. We had to pick 1 activity to do out of all the 8 choices.
I picked: It's important that we promote ourselves positively online and don't overshare things about ourselves. Take part in the ko wai gu? Cybersmart challenge. Follow the instructions given, then show your teacher before posting it to your blog."
I wrote some sensible information about myself that I could share to this blog.
Thank you for reading my blog, I'll be posting more often for this term, goodbye :)
Today I will be talking about everything we did during shaping up. We have learnt tons of things this term, we were focusing on the topic about geometry.
The first lesson that we did was connecting the geometric Matariki star. Then it goes on with learning about polygons, lines and angles (parallel lines, line, line segment, point, ray, intersecting line, perpendicular lines & midpoint), Angles (Right angle, obtuse, acute), Reflection/Rotation/Translation, lines of symmetry, compass, nets, scales, maps & 3D shapes.
Geometric Matariki stars: We had to draw a 5cm line on the middle of the book and label them beside the lines as A and B. Then 178-20 dots should be added separately around the book, then we had to connect it until it looks something like a Matariki stars.
Polygons: We were told to go to this website that was shared with us, it's all about polygons. What makes a polygon? It has 2 dimensional shapes, and are made out of straight lines (Curve is not a polygon), the shapes are closed. I also learnt about different types of polygons like Regular and irregular, concave and convex, simple or complex. We also had to remember the shapes' sides. At the bottom of this website, there are questions relating to what we've learn that we could answer. The last thing we did was drawing random lines on paper and colour the same number of sides.
Lines and Angles: There were exactly 3 activities about lines and angles that should be completed. Before we did any of these, we had to discuss it as a whole. The first and second activity was kind of similar, connecting the names of these different types of line into the line, basically identifying the lines. For activity 3, we had a go to play this game, it's like connect four.
Thank you for reading my blog and I apologise for this late post, goodbye!
Today is an another blog during Science. Our experiments for today is about Skittles. We'll be putting the Skittles in the water and observe on what's gonna happened.
Aim: I want to find out what happens when you put Skittles in water.
Method:
Equipment:
8 Skittles
Warm water
1 Petri dish
1 beaker
Paper towel
Instructions:
Get your equipment ready.
Put the Skittles into the Petri Dish.
Spread them out around the sides.
Before using the beaker, make sure to clean it.
Put a warm water in the beaker.
Gently pour the water in the middle of the petri dish.
Observe what happens.
Result:
Before:
After:
After pouring the warm water inside the petri dish with the skittles, the colours in the Skittles started to fade and it starts to spread with the water which makes a pattern with these colours. Although the food colours didn't mix, the reason for this is because every food colour has a similar measure of sugar that's dissolve from each skittle.
Thank you for reading my blog, I'll see you all next time, goodbye!
Today I will be talking about PE that is on every Wednesday and Thursday. I've learnt many skills and really enjoyed it.
Fitness:
For the first week, we did fitness. We were doing exercises and stretches. We did push up, burpees and alot of running. We also tried doing the beep test. Beep test is when you have to run when you hear the beep and you must make it to the line, the beep gets faster and faster, if you don't make it in to the line, you're out, or if you get tired and you can't run anymore, you're also out. I don't think I did pretty well on the beep test because I got tired easily.
Football:
The second week we did Football for 2 weeks. I honestly have no experience in playing football so I had no idea how to play it. First thing we did was getting into pairs and did the passing. We also played a game, when we had to verse other teams. For me, it was a little hard for me to keep track of the soccer ball in the middle of the game.
Hockey:
We also had 2 weeks of playing this sport. I've been playing hockey since I was in year 6, I know most of the rules so I was able to play it properly. Among the sports we've played, I really enjoyed this one. I'm working on passing the hockey ball across the field instead of passing it in the middle of the field where everyone goes for it.
Volleyball:
We had volleyball last week and this week. I'm currently working on setting the ball instead of bumping it all the time. But I think I did good when serving the ball.
I'm looking forward for netball next week.
Thank you for taking time to read my blog, that's all for now, goodbye!
Last week, we had to read a short text of information about the topic 'Earth Day 2021: Restore our earth'. After reading them, we had to answer some questions about the text. There are some questions that I haven't answered yet, so I'll be sharing the ones I've answered.
Which word means the same as ‘restore’?
A: Repair
30%
The amount of earth that is covered in the forest.
Around 190
The number of countries that have signed the Paris agreement.
80%
The amount of land-based animals that live in the forest
500
The number of years that it takes for plastic to decompose.
Find and copy a phrase from the text which shows that there has been a rapid increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
A: “There has been a recorded rise in global surface temperatures of 1.2 Celsius.”
What size are microplastics?
It’s smaller than 5mm
Explain what is meant by the term “Legally binding pledge”?
A: The word pledge means promise, but when used in this term, it means contract. A legally binding contract between something with consideration.
Summarise why it is important to restore our earth in 25 words or fewer.
A: Personally, It is important to restore our earth to keep a healthy and safe place for everyone to live in. To be able to live in a peaceful world.
Thank you for reading my blog, those are some of the information's I could answer for now. Have a great day.
